Gastronomic afternoon in Sorrento on the Amalfi Coast

The last item you will be thinking of packing when getting ready for your yacht charter on the Amalfi Coast is of course an apron. You might want to reconsider after learning about this unique opportunity to be a chef for an afternoon in a stunning villa in Sorrento.

The typical Sorrento family atmosphere

Palazzo del Barone, set among lush citrus groves and centuries old olive trees, is the ideal place if you are looking for an elegant and quiet location for a personalized gastronomic experience with your loved ones. Everyone has their favorite Italian dish and here you will learn how to excel at yours! Sorrento cuisine is known for their gnocchi alla Sorrentina, Caprese salad and for the century old debate about who has the best pizza in Italy, Naples or Sorrento.

Today you will be able to participate in this discussion and cast your vote. Completely restored in 2017, Palazzo del Barone enjoys a stunning view of the Sorrento Bay, the Gulf of Naples, the majestic Mount Vesuvius and the island of Capri with its Faraglioni rocks. You will feel right at home when welcomed by the typical Sorrento family atmosphere.

The limoncello making process

As the famous Limoncello di Capri will be on the menu later, you will be introduced to the limoncello making process. Only certified local heirloom lemons are used. This variety of lemon is large, shaped like an oval, has an bright yellow peel, and is particularly aromatic.

The fruit is prized for its juicy, acidic quality. The trees that produce this lemon are wrapped in plastic or cotton sheeting to protect the fruit from cold temperatures and rain, allowing it to mature later in the season for a more intense flavor. The lemons are harvested from February until October after being cultivated according to traditional farming techniques.

Did you know that only the peel of the lemon is used to produce limoncello? Just the first one millimeter layer of yellow zest from the fruit is used, thus leaving the bitter white inner pith behind. The zest is where the fruit´s limonene is located, a pungent essential oil that gives limoncello its famous scent. The lemon zest is left to macerate in pure 95% alcohol for about a week, after which the infusion is filtered and the zest, which has in the meantime lost all its aroma, is discarded. The infusion is mixed with cold purified water, and a sugar solution is added.

After this final step, which takes about an hour, the limoncello is ready and is currently being chilled for you to enjoy later!

The staff will make sure the courses are paired with the perfect local wine while you marvel at the sights of the Amalfi coast as the sun is setting.

Don’t forget to leave room for dessert! The Limoncello tiramisu is the perfect ending to this perfect dinner and will of course be served with some homemade fresh limoncello on the side.
