Visit the breathtaking waterfalls of Plitvice Lake National Park

Are you planning your luxury yacht charter in Croatia? Then National Park Plitvice Lakes with its unique, stunning waterfalls must be on your list of places to see.

The Plitvice Lakes National Park is the oldest and largest national park in Croatia and is situated in the mountainous area of the country. Your captain will drop the anchor at the most convenient spot in the Adriatic Sea to start your adventure, and after breakfast on deck, your crew will take you ashore to meet up with your private driver to bring you to the park. Pack your comfortable shoes, bring your camera and get ready for some unmatched views and sights!

The Plitvice Lakes National Park is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List

The exceptional natural beauty of this area has always attracted nature lovers. As a result of that, it was declared the first national park of Croatia as early as April 1949. The process of tufa, or travertine, formation, through which tufa barriers and subsequently lakes are formed, is the outstanding universal value for which Plitvice Lakes received international recognition on October 26th, 1979, when it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Made of limestone, tufa forms as a byproduct of the precipitation of carbonate minerals from surrounding water. When water from heated underwater hot springs rich in calcium meet with the carbonates in lake water, the result is calcium carbonate, also known as limestone.

The lake system is comprised of sixteen named and several smaller unnamed lakes, one cascading into the next. The lake system has been divided into the Upper and Lower lakes. The twelve Upper Lakes were formed on impermeable dolomite rock, and are larger, with more indented and gentler shores than the Lower Lakes. The Lower Lakes were formed in permeable limestone substrate, cut into a deep canyon with steep cliffs. The lakes end in the impressive waterfalls Sastavci, with the Korana River springing under the base of the falls.

Hikking in the Plitvice Lakes National Park

This cave, illuminated in shades of bright blue, is the most famous attraction in all of Vis. The cave is located on Biševo Island, a tiny islet off the coast of Vis. Your crew will take the kayaks out, so you can visit the cave and marvel at the intense colors. The endless azure illumination is a trick of the light. A hypnotizing silver-blue light brightens the space inside the cave when the sunlight hits the surface of the ocean through a natural opening on its arched roof and reflects off the seabed. Your chief stewardess will take plenty of pictures of you and your loved ones while you are exploring the cave to show to your friends back home!

Towards the end of the 19th century, Plitvice was discovered by the sovereigns of that time and a trail was constructed leading to the Tupi Medveđak Peak that fits nicely into the landscape and reflects the exceptional care devoted to nature conservation. The eight kilometer long woodland Medveđak slope represents one of the most enchanting points in the park, with its numerous panoramic vistas of the Plitvice Lakes and of the entire area between Mala Kapela and Lička Plješivica. The ridge is characterized by three peaks: Oštri Medveđak (889 m), Tupi Medveđak (868 m) and Turčić (801 m), covered in old beech forests that had been left to develop on their own terms. This area is exceptionally rich in biodiversity, teeming with species that thrive in the natural conditions, and is a perfect habitat for large predators like the wolf, the lynx, and the brown bear.  As a matter of fact, the massif is called after the bear, the Croatian word medvjed was the inspiration for the name Medveđak. Keep your eyes peeled and listen closely, you might hear the sounds of wild animals while enjoying the vibrant colors surrounding you and your loved ones. This is a good time to take plenty of pictures to relive your trip to the park once you are back onboard of your yacht!
