How much does a yacht charter cost: What is included and not included
For centuries, yachting has epitomized luxury and adventure, allowing individuals to sail the open seas in unparalleled comfort and style. Chartering a yacht is a dream for many, providing a unique opportunity to explore the world's most beautiful coastlines and remote destinations. However, as with any exclusive experience, the question of cost often arises. In this blog post, we will delve into the factors that influence the cost of chartering a yacht and provide insight into the various price ranges available for this unforgettable journey.
How much does it cost to charter a yacht depending on her size?
One of the primary factors that significantly impact the cost of chartering a yacht is the type and size of the vessel. Yachts come in various categories, including motor yachts, sailing yachts, catamarans, and superyachts. The size of the yacht, measured in feet or meters, will also play a crucial role in determining the price. Generally, larger yachts with more amenities and luxurious features command higher charter fees.
Here’s an approximate breakdown of charter costs based on yacht length:
- 80 to 100 feet (24 to 30 meters): €20,000 to €120,000 per week.
- 100 to 130 feet (30 to 40 meters): €60,000 to €230,000 per week.
- 130 to 160 feet (40 to 50 meters): €90,000 to €350,000 per week.
- 160 to 200 feet (50 to 61 meters): €120,000 to €600,000 per week.
- 200 to 260 feet (60 – 80 meters): €170,000 to €1,200,000 per week
- 260+ feet (80 meters +): Can cost up to €2,500,000 per week
*All prices exclude local VAT and APA.
Is the destination a factor that influences the yacht charter price?
The location of your yacht charter is another key factor in the overall cost. Popular and prestigious yachting destinations like the French Riviera, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean often come with a premium price tag. On the other hand, opting for lesser-known or off-season locations can result in more affordable charter rates while still providing an enchanting experience.
Below you can find everything you need to know and all our yachts for charter available per destination before choosing the place that suits you the best for this memorable experience.
Which time of the year is better to charter a yacht?
Similar to popular destinations, the time of year you plan your yacht charter can impact the price. High season, typically during the summer months (July and August), often comes with higher rates. On the other hand, low-season bookings might offer more competitive prices and a chance to avoid crowds while still enjoying the splendid landscapes.
What is included in the yacht charter cost?
A superyacht charter typically includes a range of services and amenities to ensure a luxurious and enjoyable experience for the guests. Here are some common features and services that are often provided as part of a superyacht charter:
- Yacht & Crew: The charter fee covers the rental of the superyacht itself, along with its crew. The crew typically consists of a professional captain, deckhands, engineers, stewardesses, and a chef. The crew’s salaries and expenses are typically included in the charter cost.
- Water Toys and Amenities: Superyachts are equipped with a variety of water toys and amenities for guests to enjoy, such as jet skis, paddleboards, snorkeling gear, water slides, inflatable water trampolines, and more. These toys provide endless entertainment during the charter.
- Internet and Communication: Many superyachts offer internet connectivity and communication facilities for guests, allowing them to stay connected while at sea. Sometimes internet is not fully included.
- Entertainment and Audiovisual: State-of-the-art audiovisual systems, including televisions, movie libraries, and music systems, are available for guests’ entertainment.
- Itinerary planning: When you charter a yacht, the charter company will work with you to create a customized itinerary based on your preferences, interests, and desired destinations. They will take into account factors such as the duration of the charter, the locations you wish to visit, and any specific activities or experiences you want to enjoy during your trip. At Boatsters Black you will be guide by a personal concierge, who will design a itinerary to make your yachting experience unforgettable and tailored to your specific interests and desires.
What is NOT included in the yacht charter cost?
It’s essential to be aware that some additional costs may not be included in the charter fee. These can include:
- VAT (Value Added Tax) or local taxes. Here are the VAT rates for 2023
- Spain: The standard VAT rate in Spain was 21%. EU flagged yachts can charter anywhere in Spain. Non-EU flagged yachts can only charter in the Balearic Islands and Barcelona.
- The South of France: The standard VAT rate in France was 20%.
- Greece: The standard VAT rate in Greece was 24%, however there is a 50% to 60% discount (depending on cruising permits) for charters that last more than 48 hours, bringing the VAT down to 12% and 9.6% respectively.
- Croatia: The VAT rate is 13%. All non-EU yachts must obtain a Croatian charter license prior to the start of the charter season.
- Turkey: Yachts with a Turkish flag are taxed at 18%. Non-EU flagged yachts may start and end charters in Turkey as long as they cruise outside of Turkish waters throughout the itinerary.
- Italy: The standard VAT rate in Italy was 22%.
- Bahamas: Since 1st of July 2022 there is a new tax rate of 10% VAT, requiring all foreign-flagged charter yachts to pay this rate on the value of the charter contract.
- Caribbean: The Caribbean consists of multiple countries, and each country has its own tax regulations. Some countries may have VAT, while others may have other types of taxes or no tax at all. Rates can vary widely, so it’s essential to check the specific tax requirements for the Caribbean destination you are considering
Keep in mind that some yacht charters might be eligible for reduced VAT rates, exemptions, or special tax arrangements depending on the duration of the charter and the cruising area. Additionally, non-EU flagged yachts may have different tax implications when chartering within the EU.
- APA: The charter fee generally covers the hire of the yacht and crew, all other expenses are in addition to the charter fee. The additional expenses are covered by the Advance Provisioning Allowance. The APA covers the cost of fuel, food, wines, liquors, dockage and communications, etc.
APA that you didn’t use, you will get it back after the trip. See it as a cash balance the captain can use during the trip to pay for all the costs associated with the charter along the way. It is industry standard to charge 30 – 40% upfront, mainly a figure based on previous experience of captains globally. After the trip the captain will provide full insight on how much is spent during your trip to maintain full transparency. - Special requests, excursions, or activities outside of standard offerings.
- Crew gratuity, which is typically around 5-15% of the charter fee, given at the guests’ discretion as a token of appreciation for the crew’s excellent service.
Whether you are seeking a romantic getaway, a family adventure, or a glamorous party on the high seas, investing in a yacht charter promises memories that will last a lifetime.
