Visit the Natural Park of Ses Salines from the comfort of your own yacht
Visiting a nature park from the comfort of your own yacht, another unique activity you can undertake while on yacht charter in the Balearics! The Natural Park of Ses Salines stretches all the way from the island of Formentera to southeast Ibiza and also includes the sea channel that separates the two islands.
The stunning salt mounds
Proudly sporting a World Heritage status by UNESCO, this protected natural park is home to a range of spectacular terrains, from vast salt beds and beautiful secluded beaches to luscious wetlands, remarkable sand dunes and dense forest. The chief stewardess will go over your preferences and will set up a tour to your liking, with or without private guide. The captain will anchor near one of the beaches and have you tendered to shore to start your adventures in the park. There are several great trails in the park, all perfect for hiking or biking.
Let’s start with the stunning salt mounds. Ses Salines has produced salt for export for thousands of years and provided sufficient profit to help safeguard this area. The protective coastal wall of Dalt Vila was funded entirely by the finances generated by the export of salt. Passing the ancient salt plains you will be mesmerized by its beauty, especially where the colors of the sky are reflected in the shallow waters below. Keep your eyes peeled for organic products for sale derived from Formentera salt, such as beauty products and cooking products. They will make for the perfect souvenir for your loved ones at home!
The small village of Sant Francesc de s´Estany
By dirt road, make your way over to the magical place of Cap des Falco from where the views are spectacular and enjoy one last look at the impressive salt ponds.
The small village of Sant Francesc de s´Estany is worth your visit. It houses a small church, built in 1785, which purpose was to serve the employees of the salt industry. This building is expected to house the future Interpretation Center of Ses Salines Natural Park. Once you have found the figure of the salt man statue, you just have to have your picture taken with him.

Sal Rossa defense tower
One of the jewels of the park is the Sal Rossa defense tower built to protect the inhabitants from pirate attacks. It was built in the 16th century to defend the salt cargo boats, hence the name. From the tower’s base you are able to see the typical fishermen’s huts, where local fishermen keep their boats. If you go up the hill behind the tower, you will have a breathtaking panoramic view of Playa d’en Bossa beach.
The wildlife
The plentiful wildlife of the park is next on the agenda. One of the major attractions of the park is that not only the island’s native birds, but also the migrating birds nest there. Bird enthusiasts will be thrilled to visit the bird watching site, complete with viewing platforms to observe this flourishing habitat in action. The park is home to hundreds of species of birds and there are plenty of points set up to observe them.
The flamingo is the most representative bird of the park. Between August and October hundreds of flamingos arrive to spend the winter on the island and many others simply stop in the park to regain strength and continue their migration to warmer countries. If you are a bird lover, try to visit during these months!
The lizards of Formentera
You can also see other species such as little ringed plovers, black-winged stilts, herons, ospreys and peregrine falcons. Don’t forget to bring your camera!
Next to the 210 different species of birds some other noteworthy animals have been recorded in the natural park. The lizards of Formentera do not fear human beings so you will likely come across these animals.
An extraordinary seabed
After all this exploring it is time to relax! The park is home to thousand year old lagoons, beaches with crystal clear water and an extraordinary seabed. The waters of the park are so clean and crystal clear that diving becomes a true privilege. This is due to the infinitely large Posidonia oceanic sea grass meadows which cover the seabed. This plant, which grows only here, cleans the water and adds in oxygen, and also contributes to the natural dynamics of the dunes.
During your time at the salt mounds, your captain has had time to get the latest updates about traffic at the beaches and knows exactly which quiet one to pick to drop the anchor. Your chef has been working on all your favorite lunch dishes and your chief stewardess and crew have set up a beach picnic for you. All you have to do is sit back and enjoy the view with your favorite cocktail in hand. One of the beaches your captain will definitely consider is Es Cavallet Beach, a long natural wild beach with very clean waters and impressive sand dunes. It is ideal for taking a walk along the shore and, if you want, you can also hike along a small path just behind the beach, leading to some picturesque ponds.

The most spectacular sunsets

Jet skis and sea bobs are waiting for you in case you are ready for some action, everything is possible while winding down and having fun in the water.
Now that the day is coming to an end, the park will surprise you with one of the most spectacular sunsets you have ever witnessed. Maybe you would like to watch it while at the beach, or you could talk to your chief stewardess about slowly making your way around the park on by yacht. On deck, with your friends and family, you can take in all the beautiful colors the park has to offer during twilight.
